How To Guides

How to install your natural turf

After your turf arrives, it’s time to start installing your new lawn! Dirt one minute and beautiful green lawn the next – your green space is about to be transformed. Here’s our simple five-step guide to installing it:

Your new natural turf will be delivered on the back of a HG Turf semi-trailer. We use a rear-mounted forklift to place your turf on the nature strip. If you’d prefer your turf delivered up your driveway, please request this when you order. If your street is a bit tight for a delivery truck, please notify us in advance so we can advise our truck driver.

1. Fertilise your area

Firstly, apply one handful of lawn starter fertiliser per square metre of the prepared area. This helps establish the root system when the lawn is newly laid.

2. Start laying your turf

Start laying your lawn along the straightest and longest edge. Lightly roll your new lawn so it achieves contact with the soil underneath. Lay the turf in a brickwork pattern and push each roll firmly together as you go. If your area is steeply sloped, ensure that the lawn is pegged to stop movement. Use a sharp knife to trim the new lawn around plants and edges.

3. Heavily saturate your new lawn

When all the turf is in place, use a sprinkler to heavily saturate the lawn with water. Ensure the soil underneath is wet.

Water your turf daily (or more often). The lawn must remain moist for four weeks whilst it establishes its root system. After that, you can water it less frequently and for longer periods to encourage a strong, deep root system.

4. Consider top dressing your turf

Warm season grasses (Kikuyu, Prestige®️ Buffalo and Santa Ana Couch) will benefit from a top-dressing of washed sand (about 1m³ per 100m²). The sand fills in any voids around the runners and will bed the turf in. Top-dressing promotes growth in runners and roots after installation. It will also retain moisture and smooth out any cracks or gaps in the roll.
